Flexible Building Extension of All-Day School by Adding a Storey Using the Modular Construction Method

The Peter Alois Grimm School (PAGS) in Külsheim teaches according to the "House of Learning" teaching model of the Swiss reform pedagogue Peter Fratton. In the course of developing the school's concept, it was decided to switch to all-day operation, which meant that more space was needed in the immediate vicinity of the existing school building at short notice.

SÄBU Morsbach GmbH was able to convince with the modular construction method and was awarded the contract to build a large bright refectory with additional teaching rooms. Already during the planning and structural design of the single-storey 400 m² school building, a possible later building extension was taken into account in order to be able to react quickly and flexibly to increasing space requirements in the future.

The modular building consists of ten prefabricated room modules in which a foyer, the refectory, sanitary facilities as well as further teaching rooms, an office and a technical room were set up.

The fresh colour concept with warm red, yellow and orange tones radiates positivity and promotes good learning behaviour and positive interaction.

External venetian blinds protect the generously glazed rooms from direct sunlight, glare and heat. To match the design of the dark monopitch roof with its flat pitch and zinc roofing, the plaster coating of the façade was designed in a discreet grey and the lettering "MENSA" was added in a bright orange.

The foresighted planning of a possible building extension paid off: three years later, there was again an urgent need for additional space, which ideally should be created without major disruptions to ongoing school operations.

The consideration of a possible addition to the building allowed for a quick and economical realisation of the building extension by one floor.

In the process, all materials used for the previous new building were dismantled, reused in the later construction process in a resource-saving manner, adapted in terms of design and executed in accordance with the ground floor.

The newly constructed upper floor houses teachers' rooms, offices, the secretary's office, meeting and course rooms, a rest area and the necessary sanitary and technical room.
